From State Office
Welcome to the final edition of the State NHW newsletter for 2005. This year has continued to
see the NHW program expand around the State to make our communities a safer and happier place to live. From a National perspective, the formation of the ‘Neighbourhood Watch Australasian Advisory Board’ (see article inside) will see NHW furthered from a national perspective in relation to marketing, sponsorship and government support. We also embarked on a major review of the NHW program which will be finalised soon. With contributions to the review from NHWers and police from all around the State, we seek to identify a ‘good practice’ guide for the future of the program. To all those magnificent NHW volunteers who dedicate their time and efforts in sometimes difficult circumstances we thank you for your commitment to the objectives of the program throughout the year.
2005 State NHW Rally
In line with previous NHW Rally’s this years Rally held at Ipswich was once again a magnificent showcase for the NHW program. The Rally attracted nearly 300 NHWers and police from around the State. The Rally focused on the theme ‘Engaging Communities’ which was highlighted by presentations on the Community Safety Project, the Ipswich Safe City Project, the Seniors Task Force, Community Engagement and an expo of NHW, Department of Emergency Services and Police displays. Of course with any Rally the highlight was the presentation of
regional NHW awards and the NHW ‘Member of the Year’. Whilst it was a very difficult decision to choose the winner, congratulations to David Demspter of Bundaberg 7 (Avenell Heights) NHW. David joined his NHW in 1990 and since this time has devoted himself to the program by holding many executive positions, and to his personal crusade to ensure his communities property was correctly engraved. David continues to go well above what is expected of NHW members and his award was well received. The commitment of the Central Region NHW Liaison Award winner Senior Constable Shelly Jacques who recently passed away was also acknowledged by Rally delegates. Many of Shelly’s family and friends were in attendance at the Rally and her sister was able to collect her award and provide an insight into not only the commitment Shelly had to NHW but to the wonderful person she was. Shelly will be sadly missed by her NHW community and police colleagues.
From the staff of the NHW State office we wish all NHW members a safe and happy holiday period and look forward to working together with you next year to make our communities a great place to live.
