From State Office

New NHW State Coordinator

December 2006 saw my appointment as the new NHW State Coordinator. I have over 17 years policing experience and for the past 7 years I have worked predominately in crime prevention roles including Police Beats and Policing in Schools.

My aim as the state coordinator is to contribute positively (as part of a team) to ensure the NHW movement in Queensland continues to connect with the ever growing and changing community.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thankyou to Sergeant Rodney Bell, the previous NHW State Coordinator. Rod has moved to the Seniors Safety Project and will continue to work closely with me.

I would also like to say a big thankyou to Rod’s parents, Mr Terry & Mrs Jan BELL for their time, dedication and efforts in ensuring that this Newsletter has been distributed over the past few years.

We Need You!

If you are able to assist for a few hours (light refreshments provided) at Police HQ, Roma Street with the distribution of the State NHW Newsletter then please contact the NHW State Office. It would only be once every 4 months & your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

2007 State Rally

The 2007 State Rally will take place at Rockhampton on Saturday 20th October. Venue to be advised in next newsletter.

Watch Out! Launch

Watch Out! (formerly Junior NHW) was officially launched at Parliament House on Friday the 16th February 2007. Watch Out! aims to encourage students to adopt the principles of the NHW Program, within both the school and broader community and is closely linked to the school curriculum’s Key Learning Area outcomes. Watch Out! is also designed to develop skills and provide increased awareness of accident and injury prevention, crime prevention and personal safety.

For further information about Watch Out!, please check out the updated NHW website http://www.police.qld.gov.au/programs/crimePrevention/nhw/ .

Regional NHW Forums

In May 2007 the NHW State Office in partnership with local Police will be conducting Regional NHW Forums on the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns and in selected rural areas of Queensland. The purpose of these forums will be to provide a platform for NHW issues to be raised that require consideration at a State level. The timing of these forums will allow, if necessary, for any recommendations that do arise, to be researched and provided as advice to the state rally. If you have any further queries in relation to these Regional NHW Forums please contact the NHW State Office.

Street Sign Prices

The new prices for street signs are as follows : Large (Rural, Commercial & Marine) $28.93, Large Residential $23.09 & Small Residential $8.43. All these prices include GST.

Sponsorship News

CGU Insurance have recently announced that they will no longer be sponsoring the NHW Program past the 30 June 2007. The NHW State Office are currently seeking expressions of interest from other companies to fill this void. CGU have been an excellent sponsor and the NHW Program is indebted to the assistance they have provided. Please bear with us as we work tirelessly over the next few months to secure a new sponsor. Some disruptions may occur in the provision of merchandise and other related NHW material during this time.

Bank Fees

Recently a financial institution refused to provide an exemption on fees for a NHW group account. This same NHW group approached another financial institution who happily allowed them to open an account (with no fees). Please make sure you ‘shop’ around with financial institutions to ensure your NHW group gets the best deal.
