From the State Office
NHW Acting State Coordinator
Welcome to the Winter/Spring Edition of the State Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter. From 1 July 2008 the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) State Office in Queensland will work within the newly created ‘Community Safety and Crime Prevention Branch’. This branch will work towards delivering a variety of services that are aimed to ensure Queensland continues to be a safe place to live, work and play.
It has been an exciting time recently with the Suncorp three year Minor Sponsorship announcement, and the tabling of the NHW Review. Thank you all for your continued support and commitment to promote crime prevention, personal safety and working with your local community.
2008 NHW State Rally
We are all looking forward to celebrate 20 years of NHW in Qld. The 2008 Rally will be held in Toowoomba on Sat the 18th October 2008. The rally provides an opportunity for the NHW State Office to highlight the significant achievements that NHW groups and its many volunteers have made throughout this time. Just a reminder, donations of $10 per NHW group will generate in excess of $6000. See advertisement on this page.
National Neighbourhood Day
National Neighbourhood Day will be held this year on Saturday the 4th of October and NHW groups are encouraged to hold events promoting and marketing the NHW program.
NHW Forums Regional Training
The findings of the Parliamentary Backbench Review were discussed and workshopped by the NHW State Office when it conducted NHW community forums and NHW police liaison awareness sessions throughout May and June 2008. These community forums and awareness sessions were held in 8 major metropolitan and rural centres, and were primarily aimed at identifying what core objectives and community safety strategies the NHW program in Queensland could adopt in 2009 and beyond.
Another critical objective of the community forums and awareness sessions was to work with the ‘grass roots’ NHW volunteers and liaison officers to simplify the administrative and policy areas that govern the NHW program. Over 250 key NHW committee members and police were engaged through this process. A number of key outcomes from the forums will be presented by the NHW State Office at the October NHW State Rally.
