How to Mark Your Property
Using an engraver
Engravers are available for loan from your local police station or Neighbourhood Watch Area Coordinator (at no cost)
Seek operating advice before using an engraver. Not all items are suitable for marking by electric engraver.
Using a Camera or Video
The following items should be photographed or videotaped, with a ruler or matchbox beside them to assist in determing size.
- Jewellery
- Furs, etc
- Watches
- Antiques
- Silverware
- Paintings
- Collectables
- Stamp and coin collections
These photographic (or negatives of) should be retained with your inventory.
Other
Your identification code can be marked on suitable property by:
- Cold Stamping
- Welding
Where to Mark:
- Where possible, place your identification code in the top right hand rear corner of the item.
- Use your personal I.D. number, or you may if you wish use your Queensland driver's licence number as your personal code.
- Also note on the inventory list the serial number of electrical appliances, as stickers and plates can be removed after theft.

Property identification involves marking your property with a personal
code.
How to make up your code
The first initial of your first name, the first initial of your
family name, date of birth, and the letter Q which signifies Queensland.
For example:
Cameron Edward Peters
Date of birth 01-08-74
His personal code -

Write your personalised I.D. number or your driver's licence number

What To Do Next
After identifying your property:
1. Complete attached form.
2. Cut it out.
3. Take it to your local Police Station.
The Police will then record the details from this form onto the
Police Property Tracing System.
Helpful Hints
- Small I.D. stickers to place on engraved items are available from your
local Police Station.
- If property purchased has already been engraved with a personal I.D. number, place one thin diagonal line through existing engraving. Then engrave your own personal I.D. number.
