Crime classifications explanation

The following is an explanation of the offences included under crime classifications in the Queensland Police Service Statistical Review 2004/05.

Offences Against the Person

Homicide: Murder. Other Homicide: Attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, manslaughter, and driving causing death.

Assault (non-sexual offences): Assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, Driving causing grievous bodily harm, wounding, assault occasioning bodily harm, serious assault, common assault, assault of police, minor assault.

Sexual offences includes the sub categories of: 1) Rape and Attempted Rape, and 2) Other Sexual Offences which includes indecent assaults on adults, indecent treatment of children, assault with intent to commit rape, unlawful carnal knowledge, incest, bestiality, indecent practices/gross indecency, and wilful obscene exposure.

Robbery offences includes the sub categories of 1) Armed, and 2) Unarmed.

Extortion offences includes demand property, benefit or service with threats with intent to extort and other extortion (not elsewhere classified).

Kidnapping and abduction offences also includes attempted abduction and deprivation of liberty, kidnapping for ransom or gain and other offences against liberty.

Other offences against the person includes offences such as ill treatment of children, endanger lives on aircraft (hijacking), endanger lives on railways (obstructions), armed so as to cause fear or alarm and stalking.

Offences Against Property

Unlawful entry offences includes burglary, enter with intent and possession of things for unlawful entry. The unlawful entry category includes the sub categories of: 1) dwellings, 2) shops, and 3) other. Examples of other unlawful entry may be to backyard sheds, boats, outhouses, and any other property other than shops or homes.

Arson offences may include arson of buildings, aircraft, motor vehicle, crops or growing plants and any other arson.

Other Property Damage includes offences such as graffiti and wilful damage offences.

Unlawful use of motor vehicle includes offences such as car theft, unlawful possession of the motor vehicle, and attempted stealing.

Other Theft offences includes stealing from a person, shop stealing, fare evasion, stealing things sent by post, or in transit, stealing from a house, stealing from any other specified building, stealing by conversion or by a trick, and stealing stock.

Fraud offences include fraud, forgery and imposition offences. These may be computer fraud, fraud involving cheques, bank cards, credit cards, forge/utter, fraud involving stolen goods, fraudulent falsification of records, fraud on insurance companies, steal as a servant, embezzlement by officers of companies, steal by agent or collector, and counterfeit currency offences.

Handling stolen goods offences includes receiving stolen goods, possession of property suspected stolen; possess, receive, dispose of tainted property (including money laundering); and bringing stolen goods into Queensland.

Other Offences

Drug offences include possession and/or use of dangerous drugs, import/export dangerous drugs, supply, trafficking, and produce dangerous drugs. It also includes permit premises to be used, possession of things for use, or used in the administration, consumption or smoking of a dangerous drug, receiving/possessing property obtained from trafficking or supplying dangerous drugs.

Prostitution offences includes offences such as having an interest in a premises used for prostitution, knowingly participate in provision of prostitution, public soliciting for purpose of prostitution, found in places used for purpose of prostitution, procuring prostitution, permit minor to be at a place used for prostitution, advertising prostitution, and other prostitution offences.

Liquor offences include consume liquor in public place, illegally deal in or sell liquor, underage persons found on licensed premises, possession and/or consume liquor on licensed premises, false representation of age, consumption or removal of liquor outside trading hours, and other Liquor Act offences. They exclude drunkenness.

Gaming, Racing and Betting offences include found in common gaming house, keep common gaming house, play or bet at unlawful game, possession of instruments of gaming, common betting house offences, illegal bookmaking, being in a public place for purpose of betting and other racing and betting offences not elsewhere classified.

Breach Domestic Violence Protection Order

Trespassing and Vagrancy offences includes begging alms, insufficient or no visible means of support, unlawfully on premises/trespassing, vagrancy offences (other) and habitual consorting.

Weapons Act offences include offences such as unlawful possession of a concealable firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession and/or use of a bomb, possession and/or use of other restricted items such as nunchukas or handcuffs, possession of a knife in a public place without reasonable excuse.

Good Order offences include offences such as armed with intent, disorderly behaviour, indecent behaviour, resist or hinder offences, obscene, insulting offensive language, and possession of graffiti instrument.

Stock Related offences include Animal Protection Act offences including ill treatment and cruelty, stock branding offences, stock permit and waybill offences and other stock related offences not elsewhere classified excluding theft.

Traffic and Related offences includes dangerous operation of a vehicle, drink driving, driving without due care and attention, driving whilst disqualified or restricted, driving whilst unlicensed, other driving license offences, interfere with mechanism of a motor vehicle, traffic offences, and other motor vehicle and road regulatory offences.

Miscellaneous offences includes all other offences not classified to the above categories such as offences against public health, casino control act offences, warrants, offences under Queensland Legislation including Southbank Act offences and other offences under Federal Legislation.
