Online Licence Renewal Applications

To provide an improved service to our clients, Weapons Licencing has extended Weapons Application Online (WAO) to support the online submission of individual and business licence renewal applications. Licensees can now complete their online application form, provide their supporting documentation and pay their renewal application fee - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

As a courtesy, The Queensland Police Service posts/emails licence renewal packs to licensees 3 months prior to the expiry date of their licence. These packages will now begin to print with a unique Online Renewal Reference number which will need to be used when applying online to assist licence holders when confirming their licence and personal details online and will greatly improve their experience in WAO.

Processing of renewals

Section 20A of the Weapons Act provides that a licence renewal which is lodged before the day the licence expires remains in force for a period up to 42 days after the expiry date or until an authorised officer renews the licence or rejects the application, whichever occurs first. Please note applications to renew are processed in expiry date order. Renewals are currently being processed at expiry date.

Simplification of Renewal Form

Weapons Licensing recently introduced a simplified renewal form to reduce the size of the courtesy renewal package and the amount of information being supplied.  Licence holders will have to complete a simple one page form if their genuine reason has not changed.

Weapons Licensing is currently receiving a higher number of renewal applications due to a five yearly spike associated with the introduction of relicensing in 1997

Addresses consisting only of a property name and suburb

It is requested that the applicant provide the Lot and Plan numbers in every instance or alternatively provide a copy of a rates notice for the listed property. This will assist Weapons Licensing staff to verify the address.

Licence holders should monitor the expiry date of their licence

Licence holders must ensure they lodge their renewal application at least the day before their licence expires.

The onus is on licence holders to be aware of their licence expiry dates and to lodge their renewal applications at a Queensland Police Station on time.

Licence holders are reminded that if an application is lodged on or after the expiry date, they will be required to pay the application fee as well as the renewal fee

An exception to this occurs if the day before the licence expires is not a business day e.g. Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the application can be lodged on the next business day.  If the renewal application is not lodged on time the application will be treated as a New Licence application and issued on a pro-rata basis taking into account the fees paid, the prescribed licence application fee and yearly licence fee.

Expired licences awaiting renewal

Licence holders are advised that once they lodge their application at a Queensland Police Station, their licence is deemed to be valid for a period of up to 42 days after the Licence Expiry Date. This allows the person to keep any weapons in their possession during this period. For licence holders wanting to attend shooting clubs and ranges in this time to shoot, they may produce their licence card and a copy of the lodgement receipt of their renewal to the club or range representative, to demonstrate they still have a valid licence. Please note, the decision to allow the person to shoot will be at the discretion of the range operator in accordance with their local policies and procedures.
