​Applying for a Firearms Licence

Ensure you are aware of the general requirements for applying for a weapons licence.

You can now apply online for a Weapons Licence, submit all the documents and pay using credit/debit Mastercard or Visa.

You can still apply for a Firearms Licence using a paper application form. You will need to submit it along with the required documentation and payment at a police station.

Below you will find the supporting documentation requirements and specific information you must supply to apply for a Firearms Licence. Failure to submit all the required documentation will result in delays in processing your application.

Recreational shooting on rural lands (Categories A & B only)

For Recreational shooting on rural lands, the size of the property you wish to shoot on needs to be of sufficient size to ensure safe use for the category/ies of weapons (generally greater than 40 acres). It is an offence to shoot on or across neighbouring private land without the owner’s permission. 

To apply for this genuine reason you will need to supply the following supporting documentation with your application:

  • Proof of address
  • Statement of Attainment for an approved weapons safety course covering the categories of weapons you are applying for
  • Current passport quality photograph; and
  • Permission from a landowner to shoot on their land and full details of the property. This must be signed and dated by the property owner within the 12 months preceding the lodgement of your application.

Powerhead use for diving (Category A only)

For this purpose you will need to provide the following supporting documentation with your application:

  • Proof of address
  • Statement of Attainment for an approved weapons safety course covering the categories of weapons you are applying for
  • Current passport quality photograph; and
  • A letter stating the reasons why you require the use of a powerhead whilst diving.

Paintball (Category A only)

A licence is required only if you intend to acquire paintball weapons. If this is the case you need to supply the following supporting documentation with your applicaton:

  • Proof of address
  • Statement of Attainment for an approved weapons safety course covering the categories of weapons you are applying for
  • Current passport quality photograph
  • A letter from a paintball club official stating that you have permission to play paintball.
