This has been achieved by identifying weapons suitable to a specific genuine reason, providing restrictions on type of weapons and to allow easy identification depending upon their size, action, length, calibre, magazine capacity and the potential danger associated with the misuse of the weapon.
There are several categories of weapons including A, B, C, D, E, H, M and R. There are also restricted items.
The Weapons Categories Regulation 1997 provides information regarding categories of weapons.
The categories of weapons section will assist in establishing what particular category your weapon belongs to.
Under some circumstances weapons will need to be made temporarily or permanently inoperable.
For all categories of weapons, you must be able to demonstrate that you possess adequate knowledge of the safe practices for the use, storage and maintenance of weapons in that category i.e. a completed safety course and that you have adequate storage facilities.
