- What is the purpose of the Camera Detected Offence Program?
Speed and red light cameras are used for road safety purposes in Queensland.
Driving at any speed above the posted speed limit or disobeying a red traffic signal is illegal and dangerous and it is for this reason that enforcement is undertaken.
- What if I was not driving the vehicle at the time of the offence?
An Infringement Notice will be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle. If you were not driving the vehicle at the time of the offence, you can nominate the person who was driving by completing the Statutory Declaration provided. Alternatively, you may choose to complete an online nomination (QLD licence or Customer Reference Number (CRN) holder only).
If you are completing a Statutory Declaration on behalf of a corporation, you must be an Executive Officer of that corporation and provide your position title in the top section of the document.- My vehicle is registered in two names. Why was I sent the Infringement Notice when I wasn't driving the vehicle?
When the vehicle is in joint ownership, the Infringement Notice is issued to the person whose name appears first on the registration particulars. If you were not driving the vehicle at the time of the offence, you can transfer liability for the offence to the other person by completing the Statutory Declaration provided.
- What if I have sold the vehicle to someone else and I have received the Infringement Notice?
If you sold the vehicle before the offence was committed, you need to provide information regarding the transfer of ownership. An Infringement Notice is issued to the last known registered owner of the vehicle involved. To transfer liability for the alleged offence, you are required to complete the Statutory Declaration provided.
You must include:
- The date of sale of the vehicle
- The name and address of the person to whom you sold the vehicle.
It is suggested that you contact the relevant registration authority to enquire about the status of your registration.
- I have never received an Infringement Notice before. Can you show some leniency?
No. Disobeying the posted speed limit or failing to stop at a red light is considered to be a life endangering offence.
- Can I pay the fine off in instalments?
The State Penalties Enforcement Act states that payment by instalments may only be accepted if the penalty for the offence is at least $200.
Refer to 'Your responsibilities' on page 2 of your infringement notice.
- What if the speed camera vehicle was positioned on a downhill slope?
Speed camera sites are selected based on road crash data, road works, public complaints and/or other data analysis. The Queensland Police Service policy acknowledges that in some cases, it may be necessary to perform speed enforcement on downhill grades.
The onus is on the driver of the vehicle to stay within the posted speed limit at all times.
- There is more than one vehicle in the photograph. How do you know that it was my vehicle that was detected?
Depending on the Photographic Detection Device used, information such as the lane in which the vehicle was detected or a target vehicle identifier may be provided to indicate the offending vehicle. Each image is carefully examined by trained adjudicators to determine whether an offence has been committed.
- Why did I receive a red light Infringement Notice when I drove over the white line and did not proceed through the intersection?
The Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Road Rules) Regulation states that the driver of a vehicle approaching a red traffic signal must stop the vehicle as near as practical to, but before reaching the stop line.
If your vehicle is in a lane with specific road markings, and the light applicable to that lane is red, you must obey the traffic control signal for that lane.
- What does the government do with money collected from speed camera and red light camera detected offences?
The Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act requires that all money collected for penalties from camera detected offences, in excess of the administrative costs, must be used for specific road safety purposes and improvements.
- Where do I find more information about different types of speed and red light cameras?

Please note: TMR online services is available only to Queensland drivers licence holders.
- What happens if I elect for a court hearing?
If you elect for court by following one of the options provided in the 'Take this to court' section on your
infringement notice, you will receive a 'Complaint and Summons' or 'Notice to Appear' which will contain the court location, date and time for your first appearance at court.
