Licence verification for small arms ammunition

The Qld Community Safety Act has amended the Explosives Act 1999 (Qld) and inserted new laws that require sellers of small arms ammunition to verify the buyer’s weapons licence details at the time of purchase.

Under the new laws, the seller must sight the buyer’s weapons licence or interstate authority (e.g. a visitor’s licence) and verify the licence or authority using the online licence verification system.

Licence verification system

The Weapons Licensing Group (WLG) provides an online licence verification system to streamline licence validity checks for sellers. The licence verification system must be used to check the licence status when sighting a weapons licence.

The licence verification system prompts you to enter the licence number and expiry date from the weapons licence card. When you select ‘validate’ the licence verification system will provide you with the following results:

  • Licence Status: Issued; or
  • Licence Status: Renewal pending; or
  • Unable to process this form. This Weapons Licence card cannot be validated.

CHECK: Make sure you enter the correct licence details. An incorrect card number or expiry date will prevent the system from confirming if the weapons licence is valid.

Licence status: Issued

If the licence you have verified is in issued, or renewal pending status – you can proceed with the transaction.

Unable to verify licence

If a licence is expired, suspended, revoked, or cancelled the licence verification system will inform you that the licence details cannot be validated.

If the licence details cannot be validated, you cannot proceed with the transaction. Advise the buyer to contact WLG for further information.

Sellers have the option to contact WLG on the dealer hotline for a comprehensive licence check and further advice.

System accessibility

In the event that the licence verification system is not available either due to the system not being operational, or an event outside of your control (i.e. – a power outage that causes internet to be inaccessible) you must record the following information for each transaction of small arms ammunition:

  • The date and time of the transaction
  • The type and quantity of ammunition
  • The name and address of the buyer
  • The buyers licence number or authority number
  • The expiry date of the buyer’s licence or authority
  • If the licence is a visitor’s licence or authority issued interstate - note the state that issued the licence or authority
  • If the verification system is not available for use because of an event outside of your control (e.g. power outage) - record the reason why you are unable to access the internet (if known) and your internet service provider.

When you have regained access to the licence verification system, you must as soon as practical, verify the validity of the licence details you have recorded. If you are unable to validate the buyers licence details when you access the system again, you must immediately report the transaction to the police by either one of the following methods:

  • WLG dealer hotline; or,
  • Policelink: 131 444
