The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is committed to handling your personal information in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act) and the Queensland Privacy Principles (QPPs).
This Online Privacy Notice sets out how we manage your personal information in accordance with our QPP 5 obligations.
When you engage with our online services or communicate with us, we may ask you to provide personal information.
Personal information is defined in s12 of the IP Act as:
“Personal information means information or an opinion about an identified individual or an individual who is reasonably identifiable from the information or opinion—
(a) whether the information or opinion is true or not; and
(b) whether the information or opinion is recorded in a material form or not.”
The QPS services that may require the collection of your personal information include:
- Reporting an incident
- Submitting an application or registration form
- Lodging a complaint or providing feedback regarding a service or interaction
- Requesting a crime status update or updating an existing report
- Subscribing to an email distribution list
- Registering your interest to be a QPS, SES or MRQ member
- Submitting an enquiry.
The QPP Privacy Policy provides examples of the types of personal information the QPS collects when performing these and other functions.
The QPS collects personal information necessary for our functions and activities in accordance with legislation including the Police Service Administration Act 1990. The personal information you provide will only be used for the purposes for which it was collected or for purposes identified in any terms or privacy notices specific to that service. If you do not provide the requested information, we may not be able to fulfil that purpose. Your personal information will only be disclosed to another entity when required or authorised by law.
Our QPP Privacy Policy explains how you may request access to and/or correction of your personal information. Our policy also explains how you can make a privacy complaint if you consider we have breached our obligations to manage your personal information in accordance with the QPPs and provides details about how we deal with privacy complaints.
