National Firearms Register

Posted 08/09/2025

The National Firearms Register Program (NFR) commenced nationwide on 1 July 2024 and is a 4-year initiative expected to be operational by mid-2028.

The NFR will be designed as an integrated system that connects and draws information from existing Commonwealth, state and territory firearms registries, portals and management systems into one central register.

Police agencies from each State and Territory, along with Federal agencies (Australian Border Force, Australian Defence Force, Australian Federal Police, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Attorney-General’s Department and Home Affairs) are working together to deliver this project.

The Queensland Police Service will be making changes to modernise the existing weapons licensing management system. These changes will help improve the processing of licensing information and registration of weapons within Weapons Licensing Group. This uplift will contribute to the wider NFR Program by enhancing integration into the NFR and improving police and community safety.

Further information on the NFR can be found on the National Firearms Register site.
