Make a release application for a seized e-mobility device

What is a release application?

If your e-bike, e-scooter or other type of personal mobility device (PMD) has been seized by police, you can apply to have it released. You must apply within 30 days, starting from the day after it was seized.

Who can make a release application?

Only the owner of the seized device can make an application for release.

You must be able to prove you are the owner of the seized device, or your application to release the device will not be considered.

How do I make a release application?

  1. Check your eligibility below
  2. If eligible, you'll be prompted to complete the release application web form or be given the option to download a PDF release application.

What do I need to make a release application

To make a release application, you will need a copy of the relevant seizure notice.

The seizure notice was either given to you (or to the person riding the device if it wasn’t you) when police seized the device.

If the device was left unattended when police seized it, you must use the relevant seizure notice published on our list of Seized and Forfeited e-Mobility devices for the device you believe is yours.

What do I need to include in my application

In your application you must include:

  • A valid form of identification, for example a drivers license or passport
  • Proof of ownership, for example purchase receipts, warranty documents and/or photos of you with the device
  • Details of the seized device including make, model, colour and any other unique features
  • Details on why you think the device should be released, and
  • Any relevant supporting information that will support your application.

Release application FAQs

Can I apply for release after 30 days?

No. However, you can apply for an extra 30 days to give you more time to collect the information you need.

You must apply for an extension within the standard 30-day release application period. Extensions will only be granted in limited circumstances.

To apply for an extension, download the extension form (link) and submit it at your local police station.

When will a decision be made on the release of my e-mobility device?

A decision will be made within 28 days after your application is received.

What are the possible outcomes of a release application?

Your application will either be approved (and your device released) or refused. This decision is made by police officers.

What do I do if I don’t agree with the outcome of the release application?

If you do not agree with the outcome of the release application, you will receive further information on next steps when you get the decision.
