Adult sexual assault

Sexual violence is a serious crime that can happen to anyone and can be committed by someone known to you, someone you just met, or a stranger. It can often be traumatic and distressing, and we understand that reporting it is significant and can be challenging.

Sexual violence, sexual assault and sexual abuse are used interchangeably to describe sexual activity that has occurred without being freely consented and agreed to.

If you have experienced these crimes, no matter how long ago, you can tell police at any time and access support.

What to do if you’ve just been sexually assaulted

If you are a mandatory reporter under the Child Protection Act 1999 and need to report about a child under 18 years of age being sexually assaulted (child sexual abuse) or harmed, this must be done by phoning Policelink on 131 444 or in person at your local police station. Please do not use the online reporting form for mandatory reporting.

If you are a member of the public and wish to report about a child under 16 years of age being sexually assaulted or harmed, you can do so by phoning Policelink on 131 444 or in person at your local police station. Please do not use the online reporting form for child sexual abuse or harm.
