What should I do when I see a wide load approaching?

If you encounter an oversize vehicle, you should see pilot, escort or police vehicles in advance.

  1. Slow your vehicle on approach and follow all directions given by the pilot, escort or police officer.
  2. Move over to the left (kerb side) of the road outside the fog line.
  3. Attempt to pull up level and remain stationary until the truck and escort vehicles pass.

Do not drive around guide posts.

As set out in Regulation 79A of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Road Rules) Regulation 2009 [TORUM)

  1. A driver must give way to an oversize vehicle that is being escorted by a Pilot or Escort vehicle.
  2. This section applies to the driver despite any other section that would otherwise require the driver of an oversize vehicle to give way to the driver.

Additionally, Regulation 79 of the TORUM states that;

  1. A driver must give way to a police or emergency vehicle that is displaying a flashing blue or red light (whether or not it is also displaying other lights) or sounding an alarm.
  2. This section applies to the driver despite any other section that would otherwise require the driver of a police or emergency vehicle to give way to the driver. Maximum penalty = 20 penalty units or a $2000 fine.

Section 59 (ss. 1, 3 & 4) of the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 provides authority for Police Officers to direct pedestrians or vehicles as necessary by stating that;

  1. A police officer may give to a driver of a vehicle or to a pedestrian on or about to enter a road, or to a passenger in a vehicle, any direction the police officer reasonably considers necessary for the safe and effective regulation of traffic on the road.
  2. Without limiting subsection (1), a police officer may act under that subsection if the police officer reasonably suspects an emergency exists or it is otherwise necessary to temporarily prohibit, divert or direct traffic and pedestrians.
  3. A direction under subsection (1) may include a direction to the owner or driver of a parked vehicle to move the vehicle as soon as practicable.
